10 Escape Room Marketing Resolutions You Need To Keep In 2021!

Hey friends, happy new year and welcome to our latest escape room marketing blog! I hope you and your loved ones are well wherever you are in the world.

With 2020 finally behind us and vaccines being distributed worldwide – the world should be able to start getting back to normal in the coming weeks and months. And the escape room industry can start to get back on its feet again!

To start this brand new year off in the best way, I figured a great place to start our escape room marketing blogs back up again would be with setting some resolutions. For those who don’t know the concept of resolutions, they’re basically pledges people often make at the start of a brand new year. Pledges designed to make their lives better, doing things that they’ve historically not been very good at or just brand new things they want to start doing.

So today I want to challenge you to make a total of 10 escape room marketing resolutions that you’ll stick to throughout 2021. Some you may already do, others you may never have thought of doing. But ALL of them will be of great benefit to your escape room, and I would go as far as to say they are all MUST DO’S if you want to make a success of your escape room in 2021.

The thing about marketing is, as with resolutions, it must be continued consistently – not just started and stopped after a small amount of time. Consistent, long term marketing is successful marketing, so stick with these resolutions all year round!

Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Resolution #1: Put in place re-targeting tracking tools

A bit of a technical resolution to start with, but I’ve put it first for a very good reason. The sooner you put in place tracking tools (Facebook Pixel, etc) on your website and booking forms, the sooner you can build up an audience of potential customers who came close to booking but backed out. These are prime targets for additional and bespoke marketing messages designed to get them to come back and finish what they started: booking a room!

Resolution #2: Build a strategy for marketing to previous customers

Previous customers are a great source of future bookings. Whether they’re customers who want to come back and play the same room they played originally or are looking for a new challenge – you want a good chunk of your marketing efforts to go towards this. Ensure you have a strategy in place for this, ensure you stick to it – and ensure it includes text messages as these are becoming the new email with 99% open rate vs email open rates of around 20%.

Resolution #3: Engage on social media more than you try to sell

What’s the goal of marketing your escape room? To get bookings, right?

But sometimes the best way of getting bookings is not always the most obvious way. Spend last time promoting your escape rooms on social media, and more time engaging with your social media followings. Posting puzzles, running polls/competitions, sharing memes etc. are all great forms of engagement – and people who are more engaged with you and more likely to then book with you!

Resolution #4: Experiment with different marketing

Marketing, as with the escape room industry itself, is constantly evolving. That’s why you always want to be experimenting with new marketing every month. The marketing that gets you the most bookings today will not perform that well forever. Keep experimenting, keep staying at the front of the curve and you’ll never be short of bookings.

Resolution #5: Send direct mail!

Digital marketing has dominated the marketing of every single industry for the last 15+ years. And with good reason, because it works. But, as I mentioned in resolution #4: no marketing works forever. Because digital marketing is so widely used, consumers and our target audiences start to react less to it. Your digital marketing just becomes a blur alongside everybody elses. But by using more traditional marketing – in particular direct mail – you can stand out!

Resolution #6: Always ask for reviews

Get in the habit of ALWAYS asking for reviews from your customers – both in person after they’ve played the escape room, and afterwards via email if they didn’t have chance to leave one. Reviews are so valuable to you, and the more you can get the more evidence you have that your escape rooms are awesome – thus giving potential customers the confidence to make that booking with you.

Resolution #7: Get on Linkedin!

If you offer corporate/team-building bookings, get your escape room on Linkedin and interacting with local businesses! Linkedin is the social media for professionals and is the place to be when you want to be getting more corporate bookings. And if you don’t offer corporate/team-building bookings, why don’t you? It’s a whole new audience to go after!

Resolution #8: Make teaser trailers

People react to video more than static images, so make sure you use video in your marketing. Ideally you want to create or have a video editor create trailers for each of your escape rooms. It doesn’t have to be Hollywood quality, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised what you can get for your money these days when it comes to video editing on places like www.fiverr.com. Plus you don’t even need hardware, just use your smart phone to record!

Resolution #9: Have and stick to a schedule! A common problem I come across with escape room owners all the time is they’re very busy people – of course they are! That means sometimes they’re too busy to keep on top of their marketing and to try new things. But by having a schedule, even the busiest of owners can find time to market. Marketing, as I say time and time again, is something that must be done consistently. Not started and stopped ad hoc. It should be as regular as opening and locking your escape room every day. And without the marketing, the day may come when you lock your escape room for good!
